Why Do People Referee?
We caught up with referees from across the Community game in the North West to find out why they referee and what advice would they give to anyone thinking of refereeing.
Liam Moore (Wigan)
Name: Liam Moore
How long have you been refereeing? 14 months
Why did you become a referee?
Enjoyed playing and still wanted to be involved in the game. I was always told to do it as I had the personality for it, so went and did the course and never looked back.
What do you enjoy most about refereeing?
I love the hard decisions in big games. Talking with the players and both having the mutual respect for one and other.
What has been your highlight in your officiating career so far?
Touch judging the Reserves Grand Final 2012, NWC U15's Final Referee, Champion Schools Year11 Final TJ.
What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a referee?
Without doubt do it! It really has changed my goals for life and now know this is what I want to do. Its not only the officiating side of it, its the friends you make within the game and through training. On a personal level its really changed my life around losing 3 stone in just over a year to weigh 12 stone now. All of this and setting new challenges for myself. What's better than getting money for something you enjoy doing?
David Outen (Warrington)
Name: David Outen
How long have you been refereeing? 7 Years (from 2005)
Why did you become a referee?
I kept getting injured when playing and still wanted to be involved in the game.
What do you enjoy most about refereeing?
Being the boss in the middle of the pitch and I enjoy being involved in the game of Rugby League
What has been your highlight in your officiating career so far?
Touching judging Great Britain Lions under 18s, NWC U15's Final Referee, touch-judging RFL academy matches, doing interchange at Super League/Championship games, refereeing future rugby league stars and internationals.
What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a referee?
Have a go, you don’t know until you've tried and there is potential to progress and travel and if you think you can do a better job, go for it!
Rob Gaskell (St Helens)
Name: Rob Gaskell
How long have you been refereeing? Five and a half years (April 2007)
Why did you become a referee? I wasn't enjoying playing and fancied giving refereeing a try to stay with RL and really enjoyed it
What do you enjoy most about refereeing? Being in control of the whole game, knowing all the rules of the game and being able to apply them in a really practical way to let players play Rugby League
What has been your highlight in your officiating career so far? I was selected to officiate at Wembley in 2011 and 2012 as part of the Champion School Finals squad. I touched the curtain raiser prior to the Challenge Cup.
What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a referee? Give it a go, if you don't enjoy it then you've not lost anything, all you've done is gained a refereeing qualification that looks great on a CV.
Dave Yeomans (Widnes)
Name: Dave Yeomans
How long have you been refereeing? Since 2006
Why did you become a referee? I played for 20+ years and then took up coaching for a year. Didn't like coaching and I saw a poster in my local club to go on a referee course
What do you enjoy most about refereeing? Meeting other officials from and keeping myself moderately fit
What has been your highlight in your officiating career so far? Touch-judging at Championship level and Academy Finals
What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a referee? Give it a go, you may just love it!
James Simm (Wigan)
Name: James Simm
How long have you been refereeing? 18 months
Why did you become a referee? I had to stop playing due to an injury and took up coaching. I didn't like the role of being a coach and the pressures of it so instead, I decided to become a referee
What do you enjoy most about refereeing? Controlling 26 players on the field effectively to have a good game of Rugby League!
What has been your highlight in your officiating career so far? Scotland v Lancashire Under 17s Touch-judge
What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a referee? Try it, you have nothing to lose but everything to gain!
Rob Foxley (Manchester)
Name: Rob Foxley
How long have you been refereeing? 2 months
Why did you become a referee? I have always been intrested in Rugby League since I was 15 years old. I've played Rugby League for College and local club's but I prefer offciating side of Rugby.
What do you enjoy most about refereeing? I like to keep order in the middle and be fair to both teams. I also Iike to talk to the players and get my point across.
What has been your highlight in your officiating career so far? My highlight so far is touch judging the North West Youth Cup Final 2012 and receiving a trophy.
What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a referee? Take the opportunity, it's a good experience and gives you lots of confidence.
Paul Cromer (Widnes)
Name: Paul Cromer
How long have you been refereeing? 9 years
Why did you become a referee? I wasn't a very good player but still wanted to stay in the game and somebody recommended refereeing - I gave it a go and I've never looked back since!
What do you enjoy most about refereeing? Enjoy watching all of the great skill on show and talking and communicating with players to get the best out of the game
What has been your highlight in your officiating career so far? Touch-judging RFL Academy matches
What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a referee? Give it a go if you think you can or if you think you can do a better job!
